Final Thoughts... And a Little Surprise!

All My Children may have ended on September 23rd, but we here at the Pine Valley Podcast are still in mourning. So we hope you'll pardon us if we still feel the need to talk about it. (For listeners of the classic PVP, we even have a little surprise for you if you make it all the way to the end!)

Jordan and I will be back soon on the 'cast to talk about One Life to Live and other "ephemera." And, of course, we'll be counting the days until January 2012. (And no, not just because that's when Mad Men returns. TheOnlineNetwork.com, people! Enter your e-mail in both fields, and you'll be kept informed of all of the latest online soapy happenings courtesy of Prospect Park. All My Children forever!)

Oh, and don't forget: keep on telling us what you think, here.

As I type this (draft version), it’s 3:27 AM west coast time. What do I see, on SOAPnet, at this hour? AMC!!! But, not just that. Storylines from about 5 years ago….Josh, Babe (my favorite one), b**chy Kendall, ’Di from the streets’-LOL!---and Myrtle (with with Zack—I genuinely enjoyed them together ) She gave Zach a heart, imho. Reruns makes me a happy soap fan.--I genuinely miss AMC, come noontime.

brtedi said...

Oh, I get it! Apparently, SOAPnet has book ended AMC and OLTL from 3-5, in the morning. “Brittany”, Starr’s nemesis—Portia Reigner fresh from her temporary stint on AMC- is going for broke. I also see one of the major reasons I began with OLTL--Renee Elise Goldsberry.

Unless I’m mistaken, these episodes have filled the slots that used to be reserved for Ryans Hope. You’d think tptb would remove a few episodes of “The OC” or “90210”—(((sigh)) so there’d be room (somewhere in schedule) for all 3 of these much more deserving, traditional, soaps.

Loved the podcast. Loving Days of Our Lives and One Life to Live. Hating General Hospital and The Young and the Restless.

Is it weird that, even though Robin Strasser was nowhere in sight, I loved Blair calling her Aunt Dorian for help? Because I did. A lot.

Things are getting desperate at The Chew so Frons is trying to sex it up. Next week Mario Batali appears shirtless.

Loved the surprise! And the rest of the episode, too!

What a delightful surprise to scroll through my ipod and find a brand new episode that I didn't even know had downloaded.

Ashley and Jordan you made my day with your asstoot commentary and insights on life .... and the Taylor Crawford update wasn't too shabby either.

Wishing everyone a wonderful day.

Did anyone else find it strange that ABC did not say "thank you" to the cast and viewers for being apart of 41 years with All My Children? They did it for Lost and Alias when the both ended. I expected more from ABC.

ABC Faux Alert: The Chew improves on Proactiv infomercials by 50%; Closes in on ShamWow; Triples Big Mouth Billy Bass among women with a pulse!

Shadow said...

An astoot point Brian. ABC handled the whole thing so poorly. They squandered a really great PR opportunity and pissed everybody off. Frons was arrogant and rude. Batali's clueless remarks didn't help. Barbara Walters was a bitch about it. It all came on the heels of Pratt, the move and Kreizman. Then ABC shitcanned the show and dissed the viewers, the genre. It was very reminiscent of how they dumped on Eden Reigel when she left the show. At least after Lucci finally blew a gasket ABC didn't show up with a hypocritical sad goodbye.

If somebody with a brain had been in charge, ABC could have given the series a final air date, told the cast respectfully, had a press release with both Lucci and Nixon and presented a united front. They could have had farewell tours with Lucci's book tour. They could have had a year of talk shows, press, viewer events and ever so slowly start rolling out the new shows. They could have done some witty 'What If" webisodes where AMC & Chew collide. It could have been a statement that ABC cares about and understands its viewer base, appreciates its history and knows where its headed as the the dominant daytime network.

Clearly, ABC doesn't know its audience, doesn't value its history, has no appreciation for 41 years of goodwill with viewers or stars, is completely out of touch with viewer trends and has no idea how to transition from old media to new media. Like the recycled hacks Frons hired to write AMC with McTavish, Pratt and Kreizman, Frons is a relic for a TV world that doesn't exist anymore. He isn't a visionary and he will be the death of ABC in daytime. at some point, Sweeney will have to answer for letting him continue on this path. Disney has too many channels. People won't pay for that much longer. The future is not in cable. It's online, broadband and apps. the production companies are lining up with new distribution and the need for big networks is diminishing. If anything, ABC should ditch entertainment altogether and focus on realtime sports before the big conferences strike their own deals. The Longhorn Network is one example of a big school trying to cut out the middleman. I'm not sure ABC can turn the tide, but the difference between it and others is the number of eyeballs. Those will be important as the world transitions--every bit as much as women 18- whatever.

I haven't touched ABC since AMC ended. I can't miss what I don't know. I'm all over Netflix, Hulu+...It's amazingly freeing. I watch when & where I want on an iPad. I'm no longer stranded on the couch. It's a completely different experience. It fits my crazy life. Had it not been for Frons and ABC I may not have made this mental leap. Which underscores the point that all Frons accomplished in this process was convincing his viewers that they actually ARE too busy for ABC & that there actually ARE easier ways to watch the shows that fit our lifestyles. It just so happens that in pissing us off, we found that ABC is the relic we can live without and we'll move on to newer better easier options with the shows we love. ABC is no longer the one to turn to for much of anything in the digital world.

Arizonagal said...

Oooh, a new podcast, I will treasure it and play it over and over again, truly a special gift of love from Jordan and Ashley.

Anyone catch Debbi Morgan's debut on YR today? I am intrigued. She had like 10 seconds screen time, but she was playing a saucy little thang, quite different from the revered Dr. Hubbard. This could be good, I'm curious.

ArmlessPhelan said...

I'm not too excited about MCE going to Y&R. There's a reason I preferred Kreizman's Pine Valley over Genoa City. The show is a hot, horrible mess.

I am, however, excited about the stuff going on with Prospect Park. The music deal is huge news. And Lindsay Hartley is giving vague updates, but there are still negotiations happening. I'm surprised Jill Larson hasn't signed on already, to be honest.

And also, I loved OLTL today. The "Look Who's Talking" scenes were hilarious and classic Llanview!

Days is knocking it out of the park day after day after day. Even if Deirdre Hall is... lacking. The ratings are going up and it's fabulous.

& I am a total fan of PRINCESS DAVID VICKERS, not only for her cuteness, but because I know how much happiness a cute dog gives to elderly people & kids in hospitals, places where people need a little extra joy.
P.S. I want a bed like TÉA's.

After being without AMC for about 3 weeks, I have realized I couldn't wait until January to watch soaps. I decided tonight to catch up on all of last weeks OLTL. Pretty good stuff.

With that being said, this Jack kid is horrible! I recall comments being made in the past, but the actor is killing me! The rest of that cast is pretty good, but this kid is pretty bad.

Mel Got Served said...

JR Chandler = Cullen Crisp from Kindergarten Cop. What a creeper.

OK I just watched OLTL! WTF Stacy is coming back to life as Gigi? What ---did Dr Heyward make his way over to Llanview??????

ArmlessPhelan said...

I hate that Stacy stuff. Mostly because it's Farah Fath in the role. My dislike of that beast knows no bounds. Ugh.

I did, however, chuckle at the time travelling mention. Ron knows his history and knows how to make a joke.

Brian said...

Has anyone else noticed how short OLTL is? I watched it on ABC's website and they said the episode was 36 minutes! That's 24 minutes of commercials during the regular airing!

Crystal said...

Brian, I agree. I can't stand Jack. I wanted Starr to just grab him today and start slamming him into the jail bars. lol

So do you guys think that Stacy and GiGi had switched at some point and that is her and Stacy is the one that died? I just can't figure out why GiGi's ghost would want Rex to 'hold on' for Stacy.

Brian said...

OLTL is confusing. I'm a new watcher and I don't know what to think about the Gigi stuff. Did they do a body switch?

Talking about AMC, why has Prospect Parks not scooped up Greg Vaughan. That guy is pretty popular and could easily play Tim Dillon or JR Chandler. I would love to see some fresh faces on AMC; to me the show felt like it was verging on incestuous.

Arizonagal said...

I don't love the Stacy stuff on OLTL but I am confused. Armless, I too am not a Farah Fath fan and seeing her interactions with others on that soap reality show, ICK! Whadda bitch she is, what is JP thinking?

I was disappointed to see FF instead of Krystal Hunt in that hospital bed. Stacy and Kim had so much chemistry as buddies, loved them together. Does FF have chemistry with anyone? Not so much.

Damn I really miss AMC and the soapnet reruns don't do it for me, it was during some of the worst writing IMHO.

ArmlessPhelan said...

@Arizonagal I don't watch dirty soap, but I hear it confirms EVERYTHING that everyone on this blog already knew about Farah Fath: she's an untalented bitch.

I know reality TV is scripted, but I heard a lot about her before the show was ever announced.

Also, does anyone watch Parenthood? I watched my first episode ever tonight. THAT is what soap operas need to go back to. And Orpheus aside, that's where AMC was in its final few months.

JSpear8 said...

I am listening also. I rarely comment but I am listening and missing my AMC. :( I settle for the old episodes. I can say now I can see the difference in writing and FINALLY understand what you and ashley were b*tching about back then. LMAO. Previous to that I didnt know what good soap writing was and it seemed like people were just complaining for the sake of complaining. I know better now. :) I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT! lol

THE FLYING NEGRO said...

Like many others, I am beyond confused about OLTL's Gigi/Stacy. If this is another twin/clone/plastic surgery storyline, I'm going to jump out a window...we JUST had the Todd-Victor mess, and now this ish!

Sometimes, OLTL is just too cartoonish for me. Talking dogs, Madame Delphina, next thing you know there will be a talking doll.

Ron Carlivati, PLEASE stop this foolishness! Lol!

Arizonagal said...

Yeah, talking dogs and kids. I love Delphina, she kind of reminded me of Ethel in her delivery "Ethel to Tilly". When Todd is on screen I am riveted. I love Roger Howarth. I didn't watch OLTL when he was on before so when Jordan would rave about him I'd wonder what the fuss was about because I thought TSJ was perfectly fine as Todd. Now I get it.

Minor nitpick, or maybe not so minor. I really hate it when TIIC decide to screw around with history. Example, Unaborted Josh, which if I think about it, still pisses me off. That was totally unnecessary and really offended me.

Same thing with Todd. For eight years we were supposed to believe TSJ was the real Todd then this bullshit with Ilene and brain washing? I hate that, it cheapens the show and calls into question the creativity of the so called creative forces of the writers.

Though I love RH, there must've been a better way to bring him back. TIIC get paid the big bucks to do it right and these SLs are an insult to the viewers.

So Jack had his big opportunity the last few days to show us his acting talents. Damn, this kid really sucks and proved it many times with his big dramatic moments.

Michael said...

Amen AZGAL, there are more than a few confusing things going on right now in LLanview. The name game has gotten a little ridiculous: Todd of eight years is Victor and nobody misses a step in switching the names. Aubree isn’t Aubree, but we are going to keep calling her that for some reason. Kim is really Aubree, but we are going to keep calling her Kim and now Gigi is Stacie. Whew, that’s a lot to have to think about every time I fire up the old DVR.

I hate Jessica and Ford—CREEPY!! I hate what they are doing to Brody, and Irene has to be the most cartoonish villainess since Cruella de Ville, but it’s all campy fun, and OLTL is the last soap I have, so I’ll keep watching. Creatively the show has been great for a while now. I trust this nonsense is a momentary glitch.

I know a few people have said it, but I had my first afternoon off last week. We used to get AMC at 3pm in Palm Springs. I went for my remote instinctively, and then a wave of sadness crashed over me.

I miss you All My Children!

Christine said...

thanks again for a great podcast... I don't post often but I have to say, I ALWAYS agree with you Jordan BUT I have to comment on your Pan Am comment. Not sure if you watched the second episode but Karine Vanasse as Colette is brilliant! Not sure what you meant with your "Ohhhh" but she is french canadian (yes, different accent from France french) and compare to Christina Ricci she kicked ass in this last episode! If you didn't see this one I recommend it to you.

Arizonagal said...

Amen, hate what they are doing to Brody, I don't like the destruction of this character. I really liked him as a good guy. Yeah I know he's had a troubled past but we like hero Brody better than psycho Brody.

I also don't like where this Shane SL is going. Is Shane the killer? Damn I hope not. The kid has been through too much already. Note to TPTB, we really *care* about these characters and with a young character like Shane, it just seems so unfair to turn him into some twisted killer.

I know IOAS but I am so invested in these people and I hate it when history is disrespected or good people are turned bad for no good reason. See this is what soaps do to the viewers. I care so much about some of these people, more so than I do for characters on the night time shows I watch.

Yeah, I know, get a life AzGal!

Actually I do live a very full busy life and these moments with the soaps are my little oasis.

Terry in Toronto said...

Aaaarrrrrgggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

How did Farrah Fath get back onscreen at OLTL? I don't get it!!!!

The fans uniformly rejoiced when her character was killed off so they bring her back as another character?! She is such a talentless hack that she couldn't even pull off a half-a$$ed imitation of Stacey. I feel so sorry for the actress playing Kim who has to do her best in those scenes where the hospital bed and blanket are both outacting FF.

Why is Ron and OLTL doing this to us right when everyone is so determined to enjoy the last few months of the show on network television? Would Shane just shoot her already please!

ArmlessPhelan said...

I swear, I think JPL is giving BJs to keep Farah employed. Or had a threeway with Frank and Ron.

I haven't watched the episodes from Thursday yet, but Days and B&B are the best soaps on the air right now. OLTL has hit a rough patch, but I'm still tuning in.

Also, ATWT is getting a DVD release with episodes from 79 on!

Last night I was reading a "Two Scoops" column about "Dirty Soap" over at SOC. I sent them and email and got the following response:

Hi …

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment! I am glad that you are enjoying the show. I think it's interesting because when you have a "reality" show where all of the participants are actors (ie- professional entertainers) the show will have some sort of enhanced entertainment value.

Farah is a good example. I don't think that the whole thing is an act, but I do think that she knows what to do in front of a camera and thus is savvy enough to know what may make a good story.

At the end of the day, the show is produced by two other soap actors- Kelly Rippa and Mark Consuelos. I think that they have a unique blend of understanding the soap world and the reality/variety show rankings and that's what makes the show entertaining.

And with that, I've put waaaayyyy to much thought into a docusoap show on E!

Thanks for visiting soapcentral.com and have a great week!

Cheers,
Laurisa

Feedback:

Thank you, for such an insightful column, reguarding "Dirty Soap" I normally don't watch "reality" programs, preferring scripted shows. However, this thing is facinating, in the same way bystanders stop for a trainwreck...Why does Farah Fath say the things she does? I have no idea. Is she just course, or is she brilliant--keeping viewers wondering what comes out of her mouth, next?

Terry in Toronto said...

Farrah Fath couldn't handle playing Gigi so now they have her playing Stacy? Doesn't make sense.

Crystal said...

Farrah Fath has been acting her butt off! Have you seen her lying there. Almost as good as when she was dead but, not quite. ;) Love Stacy slathering the grease all over FF's lips.

Also I probably shouldn't have been rooting for Shane to kill Jack so he could do his finest acting (as a dead guy) ha ha ha ha.

Been trying to watch YATR but, haven't gotten into it yet.

Terry in Toronto said...

Last FF comment. I swear!

Did anyone catch the last 5 seconds of OLTL? The closeup of FF lying in the bed was so close that I could literally count the pores in her face on my HDTV and it was like craters on the surface of the moon. I was shocked that producers allowed a shot like that to air.

I almost felt sorry for FF.

Almost.

Arizonagal said...

Ha! Yes thank you HDTV, I was thinking the same thing, FF my skin is better than yours! What is with the extreme closeups? I could count nose hairs.

Interesting, did not know Dirty Soap was the "brain child" of Kelly and Mark. I haven't really gotten into it yet, don't know when it airs but have caught a couple of episodes and am convinced of the impending demise of FF and JPL's relationship.

Hey Ashley,

So sort for the delay in responding, as always life gets in the way.
Thank your for gathering your family and letting us share in the experience on September 23. It was as if we were there, and welcomed into the Mandoza fold. As always your comments were very ass-toot. We loved your fifi and your mother really made us laugh. Again thank you for going to the trouble of marrying your real family and your PVP family.

The last All My Children podcast was fan-fliping-tastic. Both you and Jordon were on point on all your comments. Sure we disagreed on a couple, but what family doesn’t have disagreements? We loved the last episode but hated Jake’s poorly delivered and ill-timed Clark Gable moment. It wasn’t authentic, and he looked uncomfortable saying it. We wish he would have brushed Erica off in a better way-it was a missed opportunity and took us out of the moment.

We look forward to continued podcasts because even if there are only five of us (and thee of us are in Toronto) it will make visiting over the holidays easier LOL.

Love to your family.

Armless...on OLTL the Rappaports were created under the reign of Jill Farren Failure and I do believe it may have been Pamela K. Long and Megan McTravish but I could be wrong.

Basically it started with the character of Sam Rappaport who was connected to Nora and Todd and then his brother Ben Davidson showed up and married Viki (husband number 5 but marriage number 7). Lindsey was Sam's ex and mother of his two kids Will and Jennifer. There was a bastard sister in there too named Grace (whose storyline is very much like the Montgomery sister storyline on AMC). Anyways Sam was eventually murdered (by Lindsey!), Ben was shoved out a window by Niki and never woke up (Viki now has his heart), Jennifer was murdered by the gay serial killer Daniel Coulsen, Will left town shortly after his step-sister Jessica Buchanan lost their baby....

Lindsey though was always so beloved because she was married to Clint but always loved Bo. She hates and I mean HATES Nora with a passion and tried to get rid of her multiple times. She a still tied to a LOT of current characters on screen and I can't wait for her to come back!

ArmlessPhelan said...

Isn't it a bit of a stretch to have DBTE Jack running the tabloid since Victor's death? There wasn't another senior mgmt person to step in? Come on now, no one is going to let that little tool run a paper. Ridic!

Terry in Toronto said...

Everything about nu-Jack is Ridic! It would have been believable if Carmen Laporta was still in the role because he could act.

Yes I did.

ArmlessPhelan said...

This Stacy/Gigi story would be so much better if we had Crystal Hunt back. Farah Fath is horrible. Andrew Trischetta tries, and he sucks less than he did at first. Fath is just lazy and gets worse with each day.

GH is terrible. They have me hating my favourite character, Olivia. I just can't with that mess.

The soaps were all so amazing just two months ago? What happened?! Days of Our Lives is the only one I would call fantastic! OLTL is still good, and B&B is spinning gold from a crap story, but I can't with GH and Y&R right now. Just ugh.

I learned a new definition of horror today: Regis and Kelly’s Halloween show without Regis. It was the most cringe-inducing hour of television since Night Gallery went off the air. God bless Kelly Ripa (I love her and she worked her butt off trying to sell the shine-o-la ) but it was like when Shirley left Laverne and Shirley, only this time she took Laverne with her and we were left with Laverne’s dad in a dress and Carmine Raguso. I was begging for a power failure. Oh the humanity!!!!
