Possibility (Or, "You Buy It, You Break It")

This week, it's all about "what" vs. "how" vs. "why."

What will All My Children and One Life to Live be like online?  With only a random handful of actors signed for each show, how the hell do they make it to air in a month?  Why-oh-freakin'-why do we need vampires (again) on General Hospital? (Though I am digging Michael Easton's hair extensions and bejeweled hand-toss gestures gi-normously.)  Should a company which pays $25 million dollars for two soap operas
(that would be Prospect Park) get to "take back" their characters from the network that sold them and the show that currrently "borrowed" them (that would be ABC and GH, respectively), or should $25 million just about sorta cover the costs of McBain and the Mannings?  (Honestly, Jordan Hudson.  Honestly!)

Lots to talk about, and talk we do.  Our co-host, the oh-so-thoughtful Shadow (at least when he's not making a masturbation joke - which always makes me giggle, by the way) joins us in the second half of the podcast, much to our delight! He'll fill us in on all things Prospect Park, and offer his own version of ass-toot and thought provoking commentary. Someone's gotta do it!

Maybe that someone is YOU! Tell us what you think, here.

The podcast was amazing; thank you Ashley, Jordan and Shadow.

I watched Port Charles, I loved seeing Alison again (started to hope she was the long lost Q heir – I remember thinking about the Barringtons and why they were never mentioned among the rich people in Port Chuck when that terrible poisoned water made everybody so sweaty), still I thought the vampire stuff was annoying.

The Thursday scenes with Caleb and Lucy made a fool out of me. They were mesmerizing! Loved it….It all depends on how much you are willing to suspend reality for the sake of entertainment. I saw the supernatural done so badly on DOOL in the 90’s that this take on blood suckers looks like Playhouse 90. Even when the plots are insane, the characters and the dialog have to be filled with veracity.

“AJ's head is enormous.” – LOL Shadow! I have been on the fence a bit with AJ. Overall I like the actor, and the character has really brought focus back to the Quatermaine clan - which is great. But the guy does go from a nice emotional moment with Michael and a poignant gesture where you believe he wants to be a better man then Tracy or Carly walk by and he lets out this diabolical laugh that some cheesy scene steal-er at a community college would not get away with on closing night.

I know cost cutting is the only way that soaps can survive. I have been loving GH overall these days, but the budget is showing a bit on screen lately. Extras are seldom seen. That Todd and Connie had to share the same office is ridiculous. That there is only one small office in the entire ELQ World Headquarters is nuts, and that set where they shot Tea’s Llanview scenes was, I am sure, straight out of the JC Penny’s catalog.

There seems to be an increasing lag time between the time we post a new podcast to the feed and the time that iTunes picks it up. If you 'subscribe' to the podcast your ios podcast app will download it automatically. If you are a non-subscriber and try to search manually and download it, it can take 1 - 2 days for the newest episode to appear on our iTunes page. Just wanted to give everybody a heads up. A couple of times there has been some confusion about the iTunes downloads. Unfortunately, we can't control that how often iTunes refreshes.

Amphitrion you're right about the sets on GH. Lucy's office, if you noticed, was a draped corner of Erica's penthouse. Tea's house was the back of a wall somewhere painted black. ELQ's office is like an efficiency apartment. Small price to pay for all the fun returns. I'll be curious how much they have to clamp down once the 50th is over and ABC decides to start wringing every penny out of it. Who stays, who goes, etc. AJ is slightly better, but the next time he's on screen compared to somebody else watch how much TV real estate his head takes up! If they don't pull the camera back it's all one enormous face.

I'm sure you all heard Cady McClain signed up for AMC. More are to be announced soon. Contracts are for a year. Some of the kids are getting SORASd and according to Jacob Young, who is staying at B&B, AMC is going to jump forward a bit past the night of the shooting. Filming starts Feb. 25 for AMC.

I loved the podcast, but I feel compelled to respond to somethings.

RC is a great soap writer, but tends to veer too far in the campy direction. For that reason, I don't feel that I owe him the benefit of the doubt, because I like camp sparingly. As a result, I am not a fan of the mention of vampires, the licking of blood, the speeding from on place to another. I don't care if Caleb is actually a vampire enough...the story around it is not interesting to me.

I know GH has a history of these over the top, but not all current viewers also watched then. I started watching when the mob was the primary focus...so this OOT stuff is foreign to me. If the show is going back to its roots, fine. I didn't watch it before, and I am not interested now.

That being said, there are many things in the characters history that aren't addressed. Lucy's character was a slayer, but it could have easily been ignored, just like it is currently being ignored that Dante is Kristina's brother. Things like that are only included when they are a part of the plot. So I can understand if that is the story that they choose to tell, but this isn't a situation where they HAD to tell it because they just couldn't ignore her history. They could have, they choose not to.

Regarding PP. I am actually happy that they are bringing back OLTL and AMC in some form. It took them a year to do it, but at least they got their stuff together this time. The stuff regarding the characters on GH is minor compared to the major news that the shows are back.

Courtney, I think you demonstrate very well what I was trying to say about the vampire story. It appeals to a small subset of GH fans, and you're right that soaps frequently disregard blunders and stupid plot tricks of prior writers. Ron & Frank were so heavily criticized about the OLTL 3 at first I do think they've started digging extra hard into GH history in response to that. Maybe they dug deeper than necessary with vampires. Initially I was dumbfounded by GH fan resistance to the OLTL 3, but I've always empathized with GH fans who fiercely protected which ever version of GH they signed on for. Not being much of a GH fan historically, I was fine with the OLTL 3 jumping to GH. At least I would know somebody. GH in the 70s bored me. GH In the 90s/2000s repelled me. For me current GH is vastly more entertaining and familiar, but by saying that Imust acknowledge how it must irk some longtime GH fans. The show today screams camp inavery OLTL manner. I could never have imagined Dorian in PC. Now it's not such an unlikely thought. Personally, I like the blended use of cast, the downplay of the mob, some of the humor, the hospital focus. The nod/wink/camp factor is reaching overdrive. It's what always eventually made me break from OLTL. Having said all that, GH is thriving and I'm hopeful Ron & Frank can course correct.

At this point in the evolution of soaps, I think it's time for a display of graciousness from those who love the genre. By no means does a fan have to quietly agree with and adore every storyline, coupling or character. A bit of witticism and snarky fun is always great in my book and there are many forums to share such thoughts. Yet despite a resurgence of popularity and even resurrection of our favorite shows, acrimony and criticism abound. It isn't necessarily a bad thing to express negativity, but now is a great time to showcase the softer side of dedicated fan activism. Rather than rehash objections, anger and bitterness to everything everyone does on these shows - even before it happens - share a bit of the love and joy these stories bring us. Faithfully watch the shows and support sponsors, casts, crews, even maybe lend the benefit of doubt to the networks and production companies who frequently appear to double dog dare viewers for revolt. Miracles are happening. Maybe during this fragile time exercising patience, peace, kindness, goodness and self control may help preserve our own credibility and foster a transformative environment for soaps to flourish another 40 years.

Shadow said...

Having said all that, this IS the PVP, so fire away with whatever my ramblings may inspire you to share. :-)

Arizonagal said...

Had all these things I wanted to say, forgot most of 'em. One thing, I don't think you need a Port Chuck history to enjoy the vampire SL. If that's what's going to keep McBain/Caleb in PC then go for it. I got no problem w/vampires, was a Buffy junkie for years.

We're watching a soap here, we have to be able to suspend our disbelief, that's the genre, it's outrageous at times, embrace it!

Shadow, how wonderful to have you chiming in, so many intelligent observations, loved hearing from you, you sound very white ;-)

Jordan, you need to catch up on Downton Abbey, how have you managed to go this long w/o knowing about Lady Sybil! I had pre-eclampsia too Ashley, and cankles like you would not believe!

Shadow said...

AZgal, of all the things I thought I might hear about my appearance "very white" was not one of them. I just had Diet Coke come out my nose. Hilarious! We may have to use that somehow. What can I say? PVP is diversity at its best.

I just heard that the Pope quit. He's the first Pope to quit in a few hundred years. I wonder what he'll do with all the extra time? Hopefully the monastery has Hulu so he can watch AMC and OLTL.

Shadow said...

I would like to nominate Father Clarence for Pope.

Testing Jordan Hudson

Ashley said...

Hmmm... Me... Jordan Hudson...lol. Okay I have to say... I dont see... in anyway that Ron is rewriting history and saying that Dante is not NuXtina's brother. He arrested Michael his brother. He is a cop. That is his job. That does not negate the fact that they are siblings that logic escapes me.

With that said...Never once did I say Ron was the best soap writer. I have gone on record to the fact that I feel he is great for this generation but I prefer the old school approach of Labine, Phillips, Marland, Lemay and NIXON! I do prefer my soaps to be more realistic and dealing with the human condition.

That does not mean that I dont enjoy other generes. One of the reason I loved soaps back in the day was they all had their own identity. I got classic stories about the human condition and family stories from AMC, RH and AW. I got high end adventure from GH. Quirky characters, indy storytelling from GL, SB & OLTL. Mysteries and crime from EON.

A soap has multiple storylines. A writer will not be able to please every single fan with every single storyline. It is why as Labine says they need to write for themselves, what they see fit. Yet a great writer does that , I feel, knowing their characters and show and audience. A great writer does not insult the audience by deconstructing a show but building upon the rich history that already exist.

It is interesting that a portion of people are fans of both daytime dramas and comic books. Both mediums bring out the loyality in fans. Just like soaps, people grow up and pass on this tradition to their children. We grown with these characters and see them grow, marry have kids, loose love ones etc etc. It is why the comic industry is getting so much flack especially my beloved DC. It's one thing to build upon the history and have change with a well constructed story like the original Crisis. It's another thing to have a half ass story like Flashpoint with no real explanation for such drastic change in continuity and destroy the rich characters we have come to love.

Ron is respecting GH history and while you did not care for Port Charles's vampire storyline ( neither did I) it happened and I would be more upset with Ron if he did not try to acknowledge and explain this somehow and just brush it off.

I was appauled during Guza and Phelp's run, when to further cement the Luke/Tracy pairing...Luke said how he never wanted children let alone another child..that is was Laura who wanted the baby.

It broke my heart to see that and I stopped watching GH. I watched GH during the Labine era. Luke was estatic when Laura told him she was preggers. TONY GEARY may have not like what Labine did with Luke but her Luke was the same Luke from the 80's. Guza and Phelps indulged Geary by making Luke a scoundrel because that is what Geary wanted to play now. Luke was an Anti-hero.

So yes, I don't feel it is fair, so many of the harsh negative comments that I have been reading. To lump Ron with people like Mctavish, Pratt, Guza and yes James Reily who were some of the people responsible for the dumbing down of daytime drama.

If Ron's storyline even comes close to Reily's wretched Marlena possesed by the devil storyline I will be the first one to call him out on it.

Yet so far we have not seen any visible proof of a Vampire. Just two women who are claiming that. Caleb killed the officer and Allison with a weapon. He licked some blood. He did not show any fangs or bite anyone. As for his scene with Lucy...that could have been just her dreaming.

I could understand all this hatred if Ron had the show in the condition that Pratt put AMC but GH is far from that. You dont have to like it...God knows Ashley doesn't but to say it's garbage or insulting...no it's not that at all.

CourtneyH said...

I feel I need to clarify myself. I am not saying that RC isn't a good soap writer. He is, he just overdoes it on camp. I was responding to the comment on the podcast that said that he deserves the benefit of the doubt. I happen to disagree with that.

Also, I used Dante and Krissy being siblings as an example of a part of history that is being ignored. I am not saying that he is rewriting history...I am saying that their relationship is being ignored. Dante would have been in jail with her to make sure that she is taken care of. Dante would have been with the family at the hearing. That family relationship hasn't been touched in a long time because right now, it doesn't fit story. That's my point. If the history doesn't fit the story, then the history isn't addressed. Nothing is wrong with that..so to me, it isn't required that this part of Lucy be addressed. To each his own.

I am a fan of the soap genre and as such, I am a fan that each soap has his own sensibilities and each fan can watch a show that caters to that. Not all fans loved the type of show that GH was back in the day. GH got great ratings then and I am not knocking it at all..it just wasn't for me. The fact that there are fewer soaps on air isn't going to change that for me. I like other storylines on GH right now, but I am not a fan of that one. To me, it isn't a matter of suspending disbelief, it is a matter of finding what is entertaining to you.

THE FLYING NEGRO said...

I think Frank and Ron are doing an awesome job right now with the show. To all the people complaining about Vampires, chill out...there are no Vampires on the show.

Think about this; In real life there are cults of humans who think they are vampires, they drink blood, they worship pagan images, and they live the whole lifestyle. Are they really vampires like magical creatures of the night? NO! Could there be gothic teens and adults who actually like to dress up, and live as vampires? YES! This is where I am hoping the story goes.

For all we know, Caleb could be part of a vampire cult or a hypnotherapist. He could have really manipulated things to make Lucy and Alison think he was a vampire. He could just be a sociopathic serial killer that preys on women under the guise of the vampire stuff.

As for his resemblance to McBain, he could be John's brother Michael. Not the guy we see with Marcy, but a twin that was thought dead in utero. If you recall from PC, Caleb used the alias Michael Morley. He could totally be John's twin brother, and you know how Frank and Ron love Dopplegangers/alters.

For people complaining about Lucy, she has ALWAYS been this wacky character. Her actions are right in line with history.

I am enjoying the show, and Michael Easton is really bringing it as Caleb. They seem like two different characters, even though they look the same.

I am not going to get excited about Prospect Park until after I see the credits of the first episode. I have zero faith in them.

I like OLTL, but AMC has always been my baybaaaaay (Mariah voice). Seriously though, I need to see something great, because if all we get are the Castillo clan (yuck) and Angie saying Damn, Damn, Damn a-la-Florida Evans from Good Times, I am not going to watch this.

Thanks for the new Podcast Jordan and Ash, and it is great to hear Shadow!!!

Hey Shadow! In truth I always check in on the PVP, I just never had much to say...with so much soap news that dropped this year, my head is on fire lately! Once AMC starts up again, I expect more people to come back. Even if the show didn't start up, I love Ashley and Jordan's commentary...They should have That Queen Ellis as a special guest one day. Jordan, that is your friend, you fight a lot yeah, but once you have a friend like that, they never go away, lol! Love Ashley's voice work (she should seriously consider doing voiceovers!). Maybe one day this year we will get another Ashley song?(wink!)

So Glad Julia Barr is coming back!!! The show really needs her! I think the show is in a good place with Brooke, Adam, Angie, Jesse, David, and Zach. They can SORAS the kids a bit...make Miranda a horrible teen to her mother, Make AJ an aspiring rapper or something, lol.

The show is recasting JR, would love to hear people's predictions and ideas on who should play him (no Tom Pelhrey please, lol!)

Thanks for the update Shadow!

I have to wonder if this Pickle Lila stuff was so popular, successful, and so fantastically delicious as to reverse the fortune of a multimillion dollar, multinational company—why the heck did ELQ ever stop making it?

I have no love in my heart for relish. I never put it on a hot dog, and I actually get a little angry when the try to hide it in my tuna salad. I do wonder though, how that crafty Lila was able to create these elaborate, undecipherable chemical compounds in one of the boarding rooms above Kelly’s.

AJ and Tracy might find it a better use of their time to consult with attorneys and possibly try to overturn the seizure of ELQ assets or restructure the corporation. After all the company has very low overhead (only four employees and one small office) so I think they can make a go of it.

Ah, soap writers and most artists have no idea how to write about the mechanics of business.

Dallas is an exception, that show is incredibly well-written and acted.

I am very excited for the return of our beloved All My Children. Soaps played a major role in establishing radio and television as mainstays of entertainment. I hope they have the same luck in the new media.

I thought the Nurses Ball had some great moments. Kind of sparsely attended. Could've used some more extras. What a tiny criticism though. GH fans seemed happy sp I'm happy for them. The cast seemed to have fun. Frisco came off like a dick and left kind of wimpishly. Glad Felicia chose Mack. Kind of silly, but fun to revisit. Everybody looked great. I really like Dr Orbrecht but BritBaby is so stupid. I'm quite curious to see where GH goes now and what happens to Scotty & Lucy after the OLTL3 return. Luke & Laura seem really tired to me. I don't mean that like played out. I mean like getting to old for these adventure stories. Moving slower. Like, you want to get that or you want me to get that" kind of lack of urgency. They need to transition to the Joe & Ruth Martin roles but with more spunk and zeal. For my money, nobody tops Tracy Q. What a glorious presence that lady has.
