Hello New Year, Goodbye (Almost) to One Life to Live

No new podcast yet, folks - Jordan is way sick. I can deal with sick, but he's lost his voice. Believe you me, Jordan Hudson without his voice is like Melissa Archer without makeup-it ain't pretty. (Ouch! I'm actually liking Melissa Archer these days - just couldn't resist.) With all that is happening in daytime and on One Life to Live, it's not a good week for Jordan to go speechless. We'll podcast as soon as the man can talk.

In the meantime, just wanted to refresh the blog in preparation for the last few eppys (sniff, sniff) of One Life to Live. It's been an amazing few weeks of soap, people. If you're not watching, you're truly missing out. Some of the finest performances and finest storytelling in daytime is happening right now on this show. Jordan and I both even got a little choked up with the dang Rex And Gigi storyline! (And, no, we refuse to believe it was the acting. Ron Carlivati knows what the eff he's doing, methinks.)

Anyway, please feel free to check in with us here during the next two weeks as we commiserate over the murder of another one of our beloved daytime dramas. (Armless Phelan, you are right on the money with your 2012 wishes for that douchebag Brian Frons.) Perhaps even more importantly, let's celebrate the last few weeks on OLTL with all the support and love we can muster: these fine folks who make the show - from the actors to the writers to the producers to (most of) the wardrobe people (though someone in wardrobe MUST be hatin' on Cassie de Paiva and Erika Slezak) - deserve it.

Thoughts, love, lust, whatever you can muster, here, please.

Oh, and Happy, Happy New Year!! We love you all and are tremendously grateful that you've helped create this amazing place where soap fans can come together and have fun and intelligent conversation. May 2012 bring you everything that you wish for - and maybe give Kentucky Avenue productions a little money, to boot!

Happy New Year Folks! The SoapNet OLTL marathon was awesome!

Hope everyone rallies around the blog for these next two weeks especially. ....Cause we only have one life, er... 9 days to live....#OLTL

Couple of comments on the SoapNot (credit Nelson Branco) OLTL marathon:

The classic episodes looked great -- like it was filmed yesterday. Ridiculous that SoapNot never should the vintage eppys.

Katrina and Marco? Haven't thought of Katrina in years.

All thes old soap episodes were pre-cosmetic dentistry. I kept noticing everybody's gray crooked chicklet teeth.

Herb was so great. And soap trials didn't always suck. This was a turning point for OLTL. Joe Riley was boring. Jenny had Dorothy Hamill hair.

There's was more dialogue in 5 minutes between Herb & Karen than an entire episode of Desperate Housewives.

SoapNet kept showing commercials for the Slimaway belt. Man, can you imagine how bad that thing must stink after a few days on a fattie? Barf.

Ack! Maria! She was a bitch! And that hair...Apparently we didn't use hair gel or paste in the 80's. Lots of frizzy, flyaway hair. Even frizzy, flyaway mullets. Max.

Clint told Asa he was going to "strap it on", and I laughed like Beavis & Butthead.

Loved watching the evolution from those huge corded phones and other techno gadgets. I forgot how pudgy little Kevin was. Love that the boys snickered when ASA said butts. "Butts" was so controversial back then. Much more realistic than Asa saying something like patootie.

Clint 1.0!! Didi! Peabo!!!! Marcia Cross as Kate! Tina was always hot! Gabrielle's accent always sounded fake. Max wasn't a very good actor at first. Bo always made the show for me.

Erika Slezak was dancing on a couch doing karaoke to some horriblr song she clearly had never heard in her life.

I wonder how many times Asa said "I'm a different man now" or something to that extent?

Didn't watch the OLTL marathon on SoapNet, but I watched it vicariously on twitter. Is SoapNet really advertising the OLTL finale? Because I haven't seen jack on ABC. The bastards.

First AMC then OLTL, Soooo Sad! I'll miss my families badly :(

I refuse to acknowledge that OLTL is ending. I will continue to enjoy Llanview while we have it.

Don't get Soapnet so I can only hope that someone posts the classic episodes on youtube.

I am missing All My children so much, and in just a couple of weeks, I'll be missing One Life To Live. I am holding on to the hope I have because of Silas Kain, and others, who believe that these soaps will return somewhere.

The ending of OLTL is sad enough in its own right, but Llanview is the last place where a piece of AMC lives. OLTL has thoughtfully made a few references to Erica Kane and Pine Valley recently as if to say, 'Hey guys, we feel your pain'. If one show or the other was on, there would be a chance for crossovers and show integration. Not sure I see any of that happening with GH, although it would be plausible to bring David, Anna, Cara, Skye and JR to POrt Charles. This week was Soap Central's last AMC Two Scoops. That's a killer. Dan's blog was the first I ever saw years and years ago. This site is so special to me. I've had so much fun with it. It's been a great diversion thru my wife's cancer, mom's cancer, and all the diversions of life. I appreciate you all and wish you the best in the new year. Let's keep the blog going! A new podcast is in the works!

I am in heaven, still watching the OLTL marathon. I'm in awe of Andrea Evan's beauty. Love seeing Vicki and Clint. Watching Viki and Dorian trapped in some basement. Noticing how well both the divas have aged. Was shocked at what a bad actor was playing Max Holden. Damn, this dude was really bad. This Luna chick? She and Max deserve each other, unintentional comic relief.

Rex and Gigi's wedding was sweet. I surprised myself by tearing up during their vows. Farah Fath acted circles around JP. Did I just say that?? Can't wait to see what happens tomorrow. I think we all know what or who is going to make an appearance.

whenever I feel sad, scared or alone, I always picture myself in the Llanfair Library, & that comforts me. Its comforted me for over 30 years.
But part of that comfort was knowing that, when I got through the bad times, the "real" Llanfair L:ibrary would be there, waiting for me.
Now I won't have any safe place to go but the4 Llanfair Libary in my heart.

I KNOW that is corny as ALL HELL, but I KNOW that ya'll, of anyone, will know wexactly what I mean.
I love you all.
Let's hold hands & face the end together.

eviaI have not seen anything about when SoapNet is disappearing, and if they are staying on the air for a while, what will the schedule be after OLTL is off the air?

Just read Darnell Williams is going to YR. Angie and Insannie are already there, along w/Special Johnny and some other AMC alumni. Strangely enough this does not excite me. Been watching YR and this soap has no soul, plus you can't recreate a Jesse/Angie super couple. Remember when AMC tried w/GL's Gus & Harley?

ArmlessPhelan said...

I saw that about Darnell, too. Knowing the racists that run Y&R, he'll be more likely a pimp and/or drug dealer than a Jesse Hubbard type character. Also, he'll only appear on the 1st and the 15th.

brtedi said...

The main reason I watch Y&R is for all of the (former)AMC players--Right now, I could get into the whole storyline/triangle being set up with with Melissa Claire Egan, Billie Miller and Amelia Heinle. This could get fun...

That said, I do wish we get to see more scenes between Jeff Branson and Elizabeth Hendrickson. JMHO, but the writers misses the boat not following through with that onscreen relationship.

Michelle Stafford is a really good performer. But, "Phyllis" is such a mixed bag, for me. I've been watching Y&R, on and off, since Guiding Light ended--and the rumors of Jeff Branson joining the cast began. And I still don't think much of "Phyllis" as a character--I'd like some of your opinions on this, if you'd like to comment. :-)

When is Ron C. on board with GH? Now, that's something that gets me enthused!

Shadow said...

Why don't they just hire Lorraine Broderick? Then maybe I'll watch. I cannot get into Young and Restless. I find it weird every time I see an AMC-er on there acting like a different person. I can see Debbie and Darnell creating some heat though. As actors, they are that good. We're talking a whole different league from Gus and Harley, but you raise a valid concern. It's interesting to me that they say soaps are washed up, but CBS is tripping over itself to tie up the talent. Who was on Y&R before the entire AMC cast? At this rate CBS will be hiring Mookie & Maya in about 8 days.

Shadow said...

This just in: CBS' Young & Restless hires #ABC canine favorite Harold the Dog, formerly of All My Children.

ArmlessPhelan said...

I've watched Y&R since the late 90s. It was never my show, but it was really, really good until 2006 or so. Now, it's competent at best, and even that is rare.

Phyllis used to be a very complex character. She was actually kind of batshit in the 90s and ran a woman down with her car. Now, though, she is just a hateful, bitter skank. Has been since 2007 or 2008.

And Y&R is really, really bad about hiring people and then not playing them or playing them badly. Poor Genie Francis is saddled with a psychopath who was later neutered and just doesn't work at all as a character. And Eden Reigel was treated horribly as were many others. The show is a mess on and off screen.

Shadow said...

Armless, your reviews are a crack up lately.

Shadow said...

CBS is pleased to announce former #AMC players 'Barry the Lawyer' & 'Winifred the Maid' will reunite in Y&R's Genoa City this spring!!!

brtedi said...

"Eden Reigel was treated horribly as were many others...."

armless, ITA, ER was completely miscast (or whas the character
just badly written, at the time?) If anyone knows what ER is capable of as an actress, considering this is the PVP pod cast, we certainly would... I can't describe it, but "Heather" was a hot mess. IMO.

Shadow: I'd love it if LoBro was part of Y&R's writing team...Hey, we can all dream, can't we?

Ashley said...

Wow, Shadow! All of these exciting AMC additions to Y&R are super-exciting! I had heard rumors that Father Clarence and Erika's assistant, Val were also joining (although for shorter, "story-dictated" stints). Amazing developments over there, huh? Can't wait!

Ashley said...

BTW - Daytime Confidential is gonna be super-jealous of all of the casting news we've broken this week!

;)

Terry in Toronto said...

OMG Ashley! I haven't thought of Erica's assistant Val in years. That takes us back in the not-too-distant past.

So excited for a new podcast episode.

TheGhostofVerlaGrubbs said...

Forget Val! Bring back her assistant Beyonce!

OLTL was delish today. And NuCole is MUCH better than old Cole. Less coke bloat. He does have really baggy eyes, though.

Loving people catching me up on the Troy/Nora/Bo/Lindsay stuff. Sounds like it was good soap. Well, parts of it.

LOVED seeing Natalie get bitchslapped it a bible. It was hilarious. Not one for violence against women, but Natalie needs to be beaten with stuff more often.

As for Y&R... They hired a bunch of GL people in 09, then GH people in 2010, and now they've moved on to AMC. Don't be surprised if some OLTL people get gigs, too. The show is a horrible, horrible mess.

Also, can't wait for the new podcast!

Shadow said...

I was thinking about the OLTL folks. All the AMC actors and actresses are cutting deals. What's left for OLTL? I don't see how BB or YR can handle anymore people. OLTL may have gotten the bigger shaft in the end because AMC got a jump start on the other roles. Looking at trades and media, even though we like the show, I don't get the sense anybody is beating down their doors. That show is always overshadowed by something and rarely gets the acclaim it deserves. I certainly wish them well.

And I prefer the coke bloat version of Cole although I heard he's an A-hole. The nuCole seems rather immature in the role. Maybe it was the writing. I don't know. I hesitate to comment because I actually support recasting. Just don't love this twitty Cole. I don't give a hoot about Starr and Cole anyway. I'd rather watch the two real bad guys.

Terry in Toronto said...

Sorry Shadow but I think nu-Cole did a great job of maintaining the character who hasn't appeared to change or if he has it's for the better. Clear thinking has never been Cole's strong suit. Remember his interactions with Hannah and then what he did to Todd in the school gym followed up by his killing Eli? The character is certainly showing some signs of the brain cell loss that we were all warned comes from doing drugs in the ABC afterschool specials.

Ashley said...

podcast should be up sometime tomorrow.

xo!

ArmlessPhelan said...

Just for the record, coke bloat Cole was brought back, but couldn't even make it a day. NuCole was an emergency recast.

Also, yay for the podcast coming tomorrow. Can't wait to hear about our lovely hosts talk about Fraternity Row.

ArmlessPhelan said...

Spoiler warning for OLTL, but I love how Ms. Slezak spills the damn tea! http://www.tvguide.com/News/Erika-Slezak-OLTL-1041253.aspx

ArmlessPhelan said...

Did anyone else watch Y&R today? They had DEBBI MORGAN's character Harmony refer to her white boss as "Miss Phyllis", continuing a long line of racist bullshit at that show.

Ashley said...

Jesus, Lord, help us. Our Angie calling some white woman "Miss Phyllis?" And why is Debi hanging on for this shit? Ms. Morgan needs a new agent.

New podcast in moments....
